The disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Phyllosticta anacardiacearum, a specialized fungus that affects various members of the Anacardiaceae family. This pathogen is a leaf-spotting fungus that disrupts the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively, often leading to reduced vigor and, in severe cases, significant leaf drop during the growing season.
Host plants primarily include various species within the Anacardiaceae family, such as mango, pistachio, and sumac. The pathogen is highly adapted to these specific hosts, utilizing the leaf tissue as both a source of nutrition and a site for reproductive cycle completion, which significantly impacts the economic value of agricultural plantations.
