Peanut phyllosticta leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phyllosticta arxii. This fungus acts as a specialized parasite, primarily infecting the foliage of the peanut plant. By invading the leaf tissues, the fungus disrupts the photosynthetic ability of the plant, which ultimately impacts the yield quality and quantity of the crop.
The primary host for Phyllosticta arxii is the cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea). The disease can affect the crop throughout its vegetative stage, though it is most devastating when environmental conditions favor rapid fungal colonization. Without proper management, the infection can spread across entire fields, especially in areas with high-density planting.
The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of small, irregular brown or gray spots on the leaves. These lesions often have a darker margin. As the fungus matures, tiny black dots known as pycnidia develop within the centers of these spots. The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental moisture. High relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures (between 20°C and 25°C) create the ideal conditions for spore germination and infection. The pathogen typically overwinters in crop debris left in the field, serving as a primary inoculum source for the following season.
Implementing a robust disease management program is crucial for minimizing losses caused by Phyllosticta arxii. Key preventive and control measures include:
- Rotating peanuts with non-host crops to break the pathogen's life cycle.
- Removing and destroying infected plant residues immediately after harvesting.
