Phyllosticta leaf spot of sweet potato is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phyllosticta batatas. This organism targets the foliage of the sweet potato plant, manifesting as necrotic spots that disrupt the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis efficiently.

The host plant for this specific pathogen is the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). While it may not always be lethal, the disease is prevalent in tropical and subtropical growing regions, as well as in greenhouses where humidity levels remain consistently high throughout the growing season.

Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, or irregular lesions on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these lesions often turn tan or light brown with a darker margin. The presence of tiny, black, flask-shaped structures called pycnidia within the lesions is a diagnostic characteristic of this fungal infection.
