The disease known as phyllosticta spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Phyllosticta botrychii, is a specific mycological affliction that primarily targets plants within the Botrychium genus. This pathogen is recognized for its ability to produce pycnidia, which are essential structures for the dispersal of its asexual spores.
The host range is largely restricted to various species of moonwort (Botrychium). These ferns are highly sensitive to foliar pathogens, and the colonization by Phyllosticta botrychii can lead to significant damage to their fragile frond structures, interfering with their growth cycle.
Infection symptoms begin as small, discolored lesions that gradually expand into necrotic spots. A distinct dark border often develops around these spots. Within the necrotic tissue, the presence of microscopic black pycnidia indicates that the fungus is in a reproductive stage, preparing to spread further across the plant surface.
