The disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Phyllosticta cavendishii, which is a significant agent of leaf spot infections in banana plants. This pathogen belongs to the group of fungi that cause premature leaf blight, leading to severe aesthetic and physiological damage to the host plant in tropical production zones.

Primary hosts for this fungus include various cultivars of the genus Musa, with a notable impact on the Cavendish subgroup. The fungus invades the leaf tissue and systematically colonizes the host, extracting nutrients and disrupting the internal structure of the leaves during its reproductive cycle.

Symptoms are identified by the emergence of distinctive spots on the leaf surface. These spots are initially chlorotic but quickly progress to necrotic lesions with dark brown to black borders.
