Phyllosticta leaf spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Phyllosticta citrichinaensis, is a common condition affecting various citrus species globally. This disease primarily targets the foliage, though it can occasionally affect twigs and developing fruit, leading to significant physiological stress and reduced photosynthetic output in infected trees.
Host plants commonly include lemons, mandarins, oranges, and grapefruits. While the disease is generally managed, severe outbreaks can occur in nurseries and orchards where environmental conditions are suboptimal, leading to premature defoliation and a decline in the overall vigor and yield of the citrus grove.
The primary symptom of the infection involves the development of distinct spots on leaves. These lesions typically appear as circular or irregular brown to grey patches, often surrounded by a darker margin. Upon closer inspection, small, black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia can be observed embedded within the center of these necrotic spots.
