Description
The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Phyllosticta cordylinophila. It is a specialized foliar pathogen that targets the tissues of plants within the Asparagaceae family, particularly affecting various species and cultivars of Cordyline grown in indoor or greenhouse environments.
The fungus is a member of the class Deuteromycetes and functions by producing pycnidia — small, dark-colored fruiting bodies that emerge within the infected spots on the leaves. These structures release spores that serve as the primary inoculum for spreading the infection to neighboring healthy plants.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions that vary in color from light brown to dark gray, often surrounded by a distinctive reddish or dark halo. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, causing significant tissue death and leading to the eventual yellowing and shedding of infected leaves, which diminishes the ornamental value of the plant.
Environmental conditions are critical for the survival and dispersal of the fungus. High relative humidity, poor air circulation, and overhead irrigation (which splashes spores onto adjacent leaves) create the ideal environment for Phyllosticta cordylinophila to thrive and colonize new tissues rapidly.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for control:
- Immediate removal and destruction of infected leaf material.
- Avoiding water accumulation on foliage during irrigation.
- Improving air movement to reduce humidity around the canopy.
- Applying systemic or contact fungicides containing copper or other active ingredients labeled for fungal leaf spots.
