Phyllosticta leaf spot, caused by the fungus Phyllosticta ericarum, is a common and destructive foliar disease affecting various species of heather (Erica) and related Ericaceous plants. The pathogen thrives by producing pycnidia within the infected plant tissues, which serve as the primary source of inoculum for subsequent infections throughout the growing season.
This disease primarily targets the foliage and stems of susceptible plants. Under favorable conditions, the infection can spread rapidly across a landscape, causing significant aesthetic damage to garden borders, rockeries, and commercial nursery stocks where these plants are intensively cultivated.
The symptoms typically begin as small, irregular spots on the leaves, which gradually expand and turn brown or grayish-brown in color. A distinct dark margin often surrounds the lesions. As the disease progresses, minute black specks, representing the fungal fruiting bodies, become visible on the dead tissue within the spots.
