Description

Pathogen and disease type. The fungus Phyllosticta hypoglossi is the causal agent of this specific leaf spot disease. It is an ascomycete fungus that infects the phylloclades of plants in the Ruscus genus. This disease is classified as a fungal leaf spot, commonly referred to as phyllostictosis, which affects the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently.

Host plants. The primary hosts are species of Ruscus, commonly known as butcher's broom. These are often used as ornamental evergreen plants. Phyllosticta hypoglossi targets these plants, particularly when they are growing in indoor environments, greenhouses, or garden patches where conditions are favorable for fungal growth.

Symptoms and signs. Initial signs include small chlorotic spots that transition into larger necrotic lesions with brown centers and distinct margins. Within these necrotic areas, small black fruiting bodies called pycnidia develop, which release spores. As the infection spreads, the spots can merge, leading to the yellowing, wilting, and premature drop of the phylloclades.

Conditions for development and spread. High humidity, poor air circulation, and moderate temperatures are the primary environmental factors that promote the development of Phyllosticta hypoglossi. The fungus spreads via splashing water during rain or irrigation, which transfers spores to healthy plant tissue. Crowded plantings often create a microclimate that accelerates the spread of the pathogen.

Harmfulness and control measures. While the disease may not immediately kill the plant, it significantly reduces its ornamental value and vigor. If left untreated, severe infections can weaken the plant, making it susceptible to secondary pathogens. Recommended control strategies include:

  • Pruning and destroying infected plant parts immediately
  • Applying fungicides containing copper or systemic chemicals
  • Avoiding overhead watering to keep leaf surfaces dry
  • Increasing spacing to improve air movement and reduce humidity
