The disease is caused by the fungus Phyllosticta mahoniae, which is a common pathogen affecting Mahonia species. As a facultative parasite, this fungus thrives on the foliage of evergreen shrubs, often causing noticeable aesthetic and physiological damage to the host plant.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic spots on the leaves. These spots start small and light-colored but enlarge over time, often developing a darker, well-defined margin. Within the necrotic tissue, the fungus produces small, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which are diagnostic indicators of this specific infection.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the disease cycle. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air promote the germination of spores and the spread of the fungus. The pathogen remains dormant in infected leaves and twigs throughout the winter, ready to reinfect new growth in the spring.
