Description
Maple phyllosticta leaf spot is a common fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phyllosticta minima. It primarily affects various species of maple trees, causing premature leaf spotting and aesthetic degradation, particularly in ornamental plantings and nursery stocks.
The fungus overwinters in infected leaf debris and twigs as pycnidia. When favorable conditions of high humidity and rainfall occur in the spring, spores are released and splashed onto susceptible foliage, leading to primary infections. The life cycle is repeated multiple times throughout the growing season.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, irregular or circular spots on the leaf blades. These spots often appear tan or light brown with a dark border. As the lesions expand and mature, tiny black reproductive structures called pycnidia become visible within the dead tissue, serving as a source for further disease spread.
Disease development is heavily influenced by weather patterns. Prolonged periods of damp, cool weather are highly conducive to the germination of spores and the rapid spread of the pathogen throughout the canopy. Poor airflow within the tree crown also exacerbates the severity of the infection.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Sanitation, involving the removal and destruction of all fallen leaves at the end of the season to reduce inoculum.
- Pruning to improve air circulation within the tree canopy, which helps leaves dry faster after rainfall.
- Application of protective fungicides during the early leaf expansion phase if historical pressure is high.
- Ensuring proper tree health through adequate watering and fertilization to mitigate stress.
