Description
Phyllosticta necatrix is a pathogenic fungus that causes a specific type of leaf spot disease known as phyllostictosis, primarily affecting apple trees. It belongs to the group of foliar diseases that, under favorable conditions, can significantly impair the physiological functions of the tree by damaging the foliage.
The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of irregular, brown-colored spots on the leaves, often surrounded by a dark purple or black margin. As the lesion matures, the central part of the spot often becomes lighter, turning greyish or tan. The most distinct sign of the presence of this fungus is the formation of numerous tiny black dots known as pycnidia, which emerge within the necrotic tissue of the spots.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain splash is the primary mechanism for the dispersal of fungal spores from the overwintering sites on fallen leaves to the healthy foliage. High-density planting and poor orchard hygiene facilitate the rapid spread of the pathogen throughout the growing season.
The damage caused by Phyllosticta necatrix is manifested through premature leaf senescence and defoliation. This loss of photosynthetic area severely impacts the tree’s energy reserves, leading to smaller fruit sizes and reduced sugar content. Furthermore, significant defoliation in late summer weakens the tree, making it susceptible to cold damage and reducing the yield potential for the following season.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the infection cycle. Prevention is critical, as controlling the disease once it has established can be difficult.
- Sanitary practices: removing and destroying fallen leaves to reduce the primary inoculum source.
- Pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration in the canopy.
- Applying copper-based fungicides as a preventative measure in early spring.
- Using systemic fungicides during the growing season if symptoms appear.
- Monitoring the orchard regularly during periods of high humidity and rainfall.
