Description
Phyllosticta leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phyllosticta phaseolina. This fungus primarily affects leguminous crops, targeting the leaves and sometimes stems, which leads to necrotic lesions and a reduction in the overall photosynthetic capacity of the plants.
The disease is commonly found in various bean cultivars worldwide. Under favourable environmental conditions, Phyllosticta phaseolina can significantly affect plant development, resulting in reduced vigour and potentially lower yields if the infection is widespread during the critical stages of pod formation.
Symptoms typically present as small, irregular or circular spots on the leaf blades. These spots are often light brown to dark brown, frequently surrounded by a yellow halo. As the infection progresses, small, black, pinhead-sized pycnidia emerge within the necrotic tissue, serving as the diagnostic feature for this specific fungal pathogen.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. The fungus thrives in warm, wet weather, with splash dispersal of spores being the primary method of transmission from infected plant debris to healthy foliage. The pathogen overwinters in crop residues and can also be seed-borne, making sanitation a critical factor.
To mitigate the damage caused by this disease, growers should implement an integrated pest management approach that includes:
- Strict crop rotation to reduce the inoculum level in the soil.
- Removal and destruction of infected plant residue following harvest.
