The disease caused by Phyllosticta pseudotsugae is a fungal infection known as needle blight. This pathogen primarily attacks various species of conifers, especially the genus Pseudotsuga. As an obligate parasite, the fungus colonizes the needles, leading to cellular necrosis and disrupting the overall physiological functions of the affected plant tissue.

The host range is largely limited to members of the Pseudotsuga family. The fungus invades the leaf tissues through stomata or mechanical injuries, eventually establishing a mycelial network. This parasitic interaction leads to the death of the needle tissue, which significantly impairs the tree's ability to undergo photosynthesis, especially if the infestation is severe and persists over multiple growing seasons.

Symptomatology involves the development of brown or necrotic lesions on the needles. Over time, these spots expand, often resulting in premature needle drop.
