Phyllosticta leaf spot is a fungal disease affecting various species of the Rhaphiolepis genus, caused by the pathogen Phyllosticta rhaphiolepidis. This infection primarily impacts the foliage, leading to necrosis and premature defoliation, which can significantly reduce the ornamental value of these evergreen shrubs.
The fungus is characterized by its ability to form specialized fruiting bodies known as pycnidia within the lesions. These structures are the primary source of inoculum, allowing the pathogen to persist in plant debris and spread to healthy tissue during periods of high humidity and rainfall.
Typical symptoms involve the formation of small, circular or irregular spots on leaves. As the disease progresses, the center of these spots may turn gray or light brown, often surrounded by a distinct dark-brown or reddish-purple margin. In severe cases, the spots coalesce, causing large necrotic patches that lead to leaf yellowing and shedding.
The development and spread of Phyllosticta rhaphiolepidis are highly dependent on environmental factors. Warm, moist conditions are optimal for spore production and infection.
