Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Phyllosticta vacciniicola, which is a known pathogen affecting various species within the Vaccinium genus. It belongs to the group of foliar pathogens that primarily impact the leaves of blueberries and cranberries. The fungus survives the winter as pycnidia, which are tiny, flask-shaped structures embedded in dead, fallen foliage on the ground.

Blueberry plants (Vaccinium corymbosum) are the primary hosts for this disease. While it may not always be lethal in a single season, the cumulative effect of chronic infection can lead to significant physiological stress. The pathogen targets the leaf tissue, reducing the plant's ability to produce energy, which often results in stunted growth and a decline in overall plant vigor over several years.

The primary symptoms include the appearance of small, round to irregularly shaped spots on the leaves. These spots typically start as reddish-brown lesions that eventually develop a lighter, ash-gray center as the tissue dies. A distinct dark, often purplish border typically surrounds the spot. Under close inspection, small black dots — the pycnidia — can be seen within the necrotic tissue of the spots.

Disease progression is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The spores are primarily dispersed via splashing rain and wind. Dense plantings with poor air circulation are particularly susceptible, as they maintain a humid microclimate that allows the spores to germinate and infect new leaves throughout the growing season.

The economic impact of Phyllosticta leaf spot lies in reduced photosynthetic efficiency and premature defoliation. When leaves drop early, the plant cannot properly store nutrients for the winter, making it significantly more susceptible to winter injury and frost damage. Repeated defoliation weakens the plant, ultimately leading to smaller berry yields and poor fruit quality in subsequent harvests.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical controls:

  • Strict sanitation by raking and destroying fallen leaves to eliminate overwintering inoculum.
  • Pruning to increase airflow and sunlight penetration within the shrub canopy.
  • Applying copper-based fungicides or other recommended treatments during the early stages of disease development.
  • Maintaining adequate spacing between plants to reduce humidity levels around the foliage.
