Phyllosticta virginiana is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing leaf spot disease, specifically targeting Prunus virginiana (chokecherry). This disease is a common concern for arborists and gardeners, as it significantly impacts the foliage health and aesthetic value of infected specimens by compromising the leaf tissue.

The disease primarily affects the leaves, although in severe cases, it can spread to petioles and soft stems. The infection process begins when fungal spores land on susceptible leaf surfaces, germinate, and penetrate the tissue. This results in localized necrosis, which disrupts the tree's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, ultimately leading to early leaf drop.

Symptoms are characterized by distinct spots appearing on the leaves. Initially, these spots are yellow or light brown and gradually expand to form darker, necrotic centers. The most diagnostic feature is the development of minute black structures known as pycnidia within the lesions. As the infection progresses, the centers of the spots may become brittle and break away, creating a 'shot-hole' effect on the leaves.

The spread of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Warm, wet weather facilitates the rapid development and dispersal of spores via splashing rain and wind. Overwintering occurs primarily in infected plant debris, meaning that the fungus can persist in the soil and leaf litter from one season to the next, posing a recurring threat.

Managing this disease requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions. Sanitation is the first line of defense; removing and destroying all fallen leaves prevents the survival of the inoculum. In addition to sanitation, the application of fungicides during early leaf expansion can significantly reduce the severity of the infection and maintain the vigor of the trees.
