Phyllotopsis is a genus of fungi belonging to the Phyllotopsidaceae family, acting primarily as wood-decay agents. In the context of arboriculture and agricultural management, these fungi are recognized for their role in degrading woody tissues, particularly in trees that are weakened by environmental stress, pests, or mechanical injury.
The pathogen functions as a wood-rot fungus, causing internal structural degradation of the tree's trunk or branches. It spreads through wind-dispersed spores that colonize exposed heartwood or sapwood through cracks, pruning wounds, or frost damage. This process leads to the loss of structural integrity, as the fungal mycelium consumes lignin and cellulose within the wood cells.
Target cultures often include various orchard species such as apple and pear trees, as well as several hardwood forest species. Key symptoms of infection include the emergence of shelf-like or fan-shaped fruiting bodies, typically colored orange or brownish, on the bark. Internal signs involve discoloration, softening of the wood, and the eventual development of a brittle, decayed texture that compromises the tree’s overall stability.
Environmental conditions conducive to the development of Phyllotopsis involve high moisture levels, low sunlight exposure, and poor ventilation.
