Physalis mottle (Physalis mottle virus, PhMV) is a significant viral pathogen that affects various plant species within the Solanaceae family. As a member of the Tymovirus genus, the virus interferes with essential plant functions, leading to stunted growth and reduced crop yields. It is considered a serious threat to both commercial greenhouse production and open-field agriculture.

The host range of the virus includes major nightshade crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and notably, sweet pepper (Sweet Pepper). The virus can persist in alternative hosts, including various weeds, allowing it to survive between growing seasons and re-infect new crops when conditions become favorable.

Common symptoms of the disease manifest as foliage mottling, characterized by alternating patterns of light and dark green areas. Infected plants often show leaf distortion, crinkling, and a general loss of vigor. Fruits from infected pepper plants are frequently stunted, misshapen, and may exhibit uneven ripening, which significantly reduces their market value and shelf life.

The virus is primarily transmitted through mechanical inoculation, often occurring during routine agricultural practices like pruning, tying, or harvesting. Additionally, specific insect vectors can contribute to the spread of the virus within a field. Warm temperatures and high host plant density are critical factors that facilitate the rapid secondary spread of the virus during the season.

Since there are no curative chemical treatments for plant viruses, management strategies focus entirely on prevention and sanitation. Growers should prioritize the use of disease-free seed and transplants. It is crucial to monitor fields for symptom expression, remove infected plants immediately to prevent further spread, and sanitize all pruning tools between rows. Controlling potential insect vectors and eliminating weed reservoirs are also fundamental pillars of a successful integrated pest management program.
