Physalis mottle virus (PhMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the Tymoviridae family and the Tymovirus genus. This virus possesses a single-stranded RNA genome and functions as an obligate parasite, infiltrating the host's cellular machinery to replicate and spread throughout the vascular system, ultimately compromising the plant's physiological functions.

The virus primarily affects the Physalis species but has a broad host range within the Solanaceae family, including economically important crops like tomatoes and eggplant. Symptoms typically present as mosaic patterns, chlorotic mottling, leaf distortion, and significant stunting, which are direct consequences of the viral disruption of chloroplast development and photosynthetic activity.

The life cycle and transmission of PhMV are facilitated by both biotic and abiotic factors. It is primarily transmitted in the field by beetle vectors (chrysomelids), which act as biological carriers. Additionally, mechanical transmission occurs through contaminated tools or physical contact between infected and healthy tissues, making standard agricultural handling a common pathway for viral dissemination.

High humidity and poor field hygiene often exacerbate the spread, as infected weeds surrounding the crop area can serve as perennial reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to survive during the off-season and re-infect new plantings.
