Description
Physalospora is a genus of fungi responsible for causing various necrotic diseases in plants, often leading to conditions commonly known as black rot. These pathogens primarily attack the woody parts of trees, although they can also cause severe damage to fruit and foliage, posing a significant threat to orchard productivity.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are pome fruit trees, such as apples and pears. The fungus invades the plant tissues through wounds, pruning cuts, sunscalds, or frost-damaged areas on the bark. Once established, it interferes with the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of nutrients and water throughout the canopy.
Symptoms typically manifest as depressed, reddish-brown lesions on the bark that expand, turn black, and cause the bark to crack or slough off. Small, black, pimple-like structures known as pycnidia develop on the dead tissue, serving as sites for further spore production. In fruits, the infection presents as firm, dark rot that spreads in concentric circles.
The development and spread of Physalospora are strongly favored by warm, humid conditions. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind and splashing rain, allowing the disease to move rapidly through an orchard during wet seasons. The pathogen can survive throughout the winter in dead wood or mummified fruits left on the ground or in the canopy.
