Description

Grape black rot, caused by the fungus Physalospora baccae (also known in its anamorphic state as Guignardia baccae), is a destructive disease affecting vineyards globally. The pathogen primarily targets the berries and rachises, posing a significant threat to fruit quality and total yield if left unmanaged during the growing season.

The disease specifically impacts grapevines (Vitis vinifera and hybrids). The severity of the damage is most pronounced during the berry ripening stage, as the infection causes the fruit to wither prematurely. Economically, this results in significant losses, as infected bunches are unsuitable for both fresh market sale and winemaking processes due to reduced sugar content and poor quality.

Symptoms initially appear as small circular spots on the skin of the grapes. As the fungus progresses, these spots expand, leading to the berries becoming shriveled, dark brown, or black in color. Eventually, the berries mummify, becoming hard and covered in small, black, pin-head-sized fruiting bodies called pycnidia, which serve as the primary source for further spreading.

Environmental conditions characterized by high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures are ideal for the development of Physalospora baccae. The spores are primarily dispersed via wind and water splashes. Dense canopy management, which limits airflow, significantly exacerbates the risk of infection by keeping the clusters moist for longer periods, thus favoring spore germination.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as removing infected clusters during the season and pruning infected canes during the dormant period are essential for reducing inoculum pressure. Fungicide applications remain the cornerstone of chemical control; these should be timed to coincide with high-risk weather events to protect vulnerable berries during the critical developmental stages.
