Physisporinus is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Polyporales, widely recognized in forest pathology as a cause of white rot in woody plants. These fungi are notorious for attacking both the root systems and the butt of tree trunks, causing significant physiological stress to the host and reducing the structural integrity of the timber, which makes them a concern for forest management and arboriculture.
The disease is caused by specific species, such as Physisporinus vitreus. It is classified as a white wood rot. The fungus utilizes enzymes to break down lignin and cellulose, effectively decaying the wood from the inside out. Once the infection is established in the root system, it can spread through root-to-root contact, slowly killing the host by disrupting nutrient and water transport.
The primary hosts for Physisporinus include coniferous species, such as spruce and fir, as well as several deciduous trees. Visible symptoms include the presence of resupinate, white-to-cream colored fruiting bodies near the base of the tree, canopy thinning, branch dieback, and increased vulnerability to windthrow due to the decay in the lower stem and root zones.
Development and spread are favored by high soil moisture, poor drainage, and existing root wounds caused by machinery or pests. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind, landing on wounds or exposed wood surfaces. Once colonized, the fungus can survive in stumps and root fragments for years, acting as a persistent source of inoculum for surrounding healthy trees.
The impact of this disease is severe, leading to timber loss and ecosystem instability. Prevention is key since curative treatments are difficult. Management strategies should prioritize forest hygiene, such as promptly removing infested stumps, preventing root damage during logging operations, and maintaining diverse, healthy stands that are more resilient to pathogen invasion. Monitoring the base of trees for fruiting bodies is essential for early detection.
