Description
Physoderma leaf gall is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Physoderma pulposum. This fungus belongs to the order Chytridiales and typically parasitizes plants within the Amaranthaceae family, most notably common lamb's quarters (Chenopodium album).
The disease is characterized by the development of small, wart-like galls or swellings on the leaves, petioles, and stems of the host plant. Inside these distinct structures, the fungus develops its zoosporangia, which often turn dark brown or black, resulting in a bumpy and distorted plant appearance.
Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on moisture. Zoospores require free water to move and infect new tissue, making wet conditions or periods of high humidity ideal for outbreaks. The fungus persists in the soil via thick-walled resting spores embedded in crop residues.
While primarily affecting weeds, the disease poses an ecological risk as it can act as a reservoir for infection that may spread to related crops such as sugar beet or spinach. High levels of infection on weeds increase the overall inoculum density in the soil, which complicates long-term management.
Management practices focus on reducing the host population and minimizing pathogen survival in the soil. Recommended strategies include:
- Rigorous weed control programs to eliminate host plants before the pathogen reaches the sporulation stage.
- Deep tillage to accelerate the decomposition of infected plant debris.
- Crop rotation with non-host species to naturally decrease the soil-borne spore load over time.
