The Phytodiniaceae family consists of dinoflagellates that can act as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural settings. While primarily aquatic, their interaction with crops, particularly in hydroponic systems and water-intensive farming, categorizes them as significant factors in plant health management and water quality maintenance.

The causative agents are motile unicellular organisms that utilize flagella to navigate aquatic environments. In a pathogenic capacity, they interfere with the normal physiological functions of the root system by colonizing the root surface and secreting allelopathic or toxic substances that inhibit plant growth.

Crops most susceptible to these organisms include rice and various vegetables grown in hydroponic setups.
