Description

The disease is caused by Phytophthora abietivora, a water mold that specifically targets the root systems of fir species. As a soil-borne pathogen, it disrupts the vascular system of the host, preventing the tree from absorbing water and essential nutrients, which ultimately leads to decline and mortality.

Primary hosts are various species of the Abies genus. The disease is frequently observed in nursery production environments, where irrigation practices and dense plant spacing provide the necessary conditions for the pathogen to thrive and spread rapidly among container-grown or field-grown stock.

Symptoms initially appear as a subtle loss of vigor, followed by needle yellowing and drooping of the shoot tips. As the infection advances, the tree exhibits significant crown thinning. Examination of the roots reveals dark, water-soaked lesions and a distinct necrotic zone at the root collar, often emitting an unpleasant odor.

Environmental conditions are crucial for the development of the disease. Phytophthora abietivora requires high soil moisture levels to release its motile zoospores, which travel through soil water films to infect new hosts. Poor drainage, heavy soil texture, and over-irrigation are the most common factors exacerbating the outbreaks.

Management strategy focuses on sanitation and environmental control. Growers should prioritize the use of disease-free propagation material and ensure optimal soil aeration. In cases of confirmed infestation, protective chemical treatments or the removal of infected plants with a significant radius of surrounding soil are essential to prevent further spread.
