Description
The disease is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora arecae, a soil-borne pathogen that thrives in moist environments. It functions as a parasitic organism, targeting the vascular system and structural tissues of its host plants, eventually causing necrotic rot and structural failure of the plant.
The primary host for this pathogen is the areca palm (Areca catechu), though it can infect various palm species within similar environmental niches. Its impact is most devastating in regions with intensive palm cultivation, where the microclimate often favors the rapid development of the oomycete.
The symptoms are marked by initial yellowing of the fronds followed by wilting. A critical sign of infestation is the appearance of dark, water-soaked lesions on the petiole bases and the crown. If left untreated, the apical bud succumbs to a soft, foul-smelling rot, leading to the collapse of the entire palm crown.
Environmental conditions are the key driver for the spread of Phytophthora arecae. Excessive rainfall, poor soil drainage, and prolonged high humidity provide the necessary water films for the zoospore motility of the pathogen, allowing it to move through soil pores and infect new roots efficiently.
Management of the disease requires an integrated approach.
- Improve drainage in palm plantations to prevent waterlogging.
- Implement strict quarantine for new planting material.
- Apply preventative fungicidal treatments during the rainy season.
- Remove and destroy infected trees to prevent secondary contamination.
