Description

The causative agent of asparagus phytophthora rot is the oomycete Phytophthora asparagi, which causes a dangerous root rot leading to systemic plant decay. This pathogen can persist in the soil for a long time as oospores, waiting for favorable conditions for active development and infection.

The disease exclusively affects asparagus (Asparagus officinalis). The pathogen actively attacks both young spears and the root system, leading to disruption of nutrient uptake and subsequent plant death. Outbreaks are most frequently observed in fields with poor crop rotation practices.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as yellowing, wilting, and subsequent browning of the above-ground spears. When inspecting the root system, necrotic areas are visible; root tissues become soft and watery, acquiring a characteristic dark or reddish-brown color. Under conditions of high humidity, a light mycelial growth may appear on the surface of the affected tissues.

High soil moisture, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures contribute to the development and spread of the infection. Soil waterlogging is a critical factor, as it facilitates the mobility of the pathogen's zoospores within the soil solution, allowing them to effectively infect the roots of healthy plants.

The economic impact of the disease consists of a significant reduction in marketable yield and the potential complete destruction of the plantation. To combat phytophthora rot, a complex of measures is used: using healthy planting material, adhering to crop rotation, improving field drainage, and applying fungicides registered for protecting asparagus against oomycetes.
