Description
The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Phytophthora brassicae. This pathogen is a soil-borne organism that specifically targets plants within the Brassicaceae family. It is distinct for its specialized host range and its ability to rapidly destroy root systems through the release of motile zoospores in wet soil conditions.
A wide range of brassica crops is susceptible to this disease, including cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and oilseed rape. The disease poses a severe threat in both nursery seedling production and direct-seeded fields, particularly when cultivation practices involve frequent overhead irrigation or heavy, poorly drained soil types.
Symptoms typically manifest as yellowing of the lower foliage, followed by progressive wilting that affects the entire plant. A close inspection of the root system reveals characteristic dark, water-soaked, or decayed roots, often accompanied by the loss of lateral fine roots. The crown of the plant may also show signs of necrosis, leading to stunted growth or total plant collapse.
Environmental conditions are critical for the development and spread of Phytophthora brassicae. High soil moisture, soil compaction, and warm temperatures create an ideal environment for the pathogen to thrive and infect root tissues. Oospores, the survival structures of the pathogen, can persist in the soil for years, making long-term land management essential.
