Phytophthora cambivora is a highly destructive soil-borne oomycete pathogen known for causing severe root rot and crown rot in a variety of woody plant species. This pathogen is notoriously difficult to manage because it can survive in the soil for several years in the form of dormant resting structures, waiting for favorable environmental conditions.

The host range of this pathogen is broad, with significant economic impact on chestnut forests, as well as various fruit crops including apples, cherries, and pears. Infection typically occurs at the root tips, where zoospores are attracted to root exudates, eventually colonizing the entire root system and the root collar.

Symptoms of the disease, often referred to as "ink disease," include severe chlorosis, premature senescence, and dieback of the crown. Upon examination of the lower trunk, reddish-brown necrotic lesions can be observed, often accompanied by blackish exudate. In advanced stages, the entire tree may collapse as the root system loses its ability to absorb water and nutrients.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Phytophthora cambivora. High soil moisture content and poor drainage are primary catalysts for infection, as the zoospores rely on water films to navigate through the soil profile to reach new host roots. Temperature also influences the rate of pathogen proliferation, particularly during wet spring seasons.
