This pathogen primarily targets Solanaceous crops, with peppers and tomatoes being the most susceptible hosts. It can infect plants at various developmental stages, often resulting in root rot, stem blight, and fruit lesions. The ability of the pathogen to colonize multiple plant parts makes it a critical threat to harvest quality and total yield.
Symptoms of Phytophthora capensis typically manifest as dark, water-soaked lesions near the soil line or on the fruits that touch the ground. As the infection progresses, affected tissues collapse, and a whitish mycelial growth may appear under humid conditions. Plant wilting occurs as the root system loses its ability to absorb water and nutrients.
The spread of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture. Zoospores require free water to swim and reach new hosts, meaning that poor drainage, over-irrigation, and high humidity in greenhouses are the primary drivers of an outbreak. The pathogen can survive for long periods in the soil through thick-walled resting spores, known as oospores.
Control strategies for Phytophthora capensis rely on an integrated approach. Essential measures include the use of certified pathogen-free seeds or seedlings, improving soil drainage to eliminate standing water, and maintaining strict sanitation within greenhouse facilities. Additionally, the application of targeted fungicides during high-risk periods is recommended to suppress the development of the pathogen.
