Phytophthora chlamydospora is a pathogenic oomycete known for causing severe root and crown rot in a variety of plant species. The organism is named for its ability to produce chlamydospores, which are specialized resting structures. These spores allow the pathogen to survive in soil and organic debris for extended periods, resisting harsh environmental conditions such as drought or cold.

This pathogen primarily affects woody nursery crops, ornamental trees, and several shrubs, although it can impact a range of host plants in agricultural settings. It is particularly problematic in greenhouses and nursery environments, where high humidity levels and intensive irrigation practices facilitate the rapid multiplication of the pathogen and its spread across large planting areas.

The disease manifests through symptoms such as stunting, chlorosis, and sudden wilting of the plant foliage. Beneath the surface, the roots show signs of decay, discoloration, and necrosis. As the infection progresses, the root system loses its functionality, preventing the plant from obtaining the necessary nutrients and water, which ultimately leads to the plant's decline or death.

Development and spread of the infection are heavily dependent on moisture levels. Zoospores, the motile stage of the pathogen, require water to swim through the soil pores to reach new root systems. Consequently, factors like poor drainage, over-irrigation, and contaminated water sources are the primary drivers of localized epidemics in fields and nurseries.

Effective management requires an integrated strategy to minimize the presence of the pathogen. Key practices include:

  • Maintaining good drainage to prevent waterlogging around root zones.
  • Implementing strict sanitation protocols for equipment, pots, and tools.
  • Using high-quality, pathogen-free propagation material.
