Description
Phytophthora cichorii is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen known for causing severe root rot and crown rot diseases in a variety of horticultural crops. As a member of the Pythiaceae family, this pathogen represents a significant challenge in modern agriculture due to its ability to persist in the soil for extended periods.
The primary host for this organism is the chicory family, particularly endive and radicchio, but it has a broad host range including several ornamental species such as Pelargonium and Primula. The disease impacts production efficiency by reducing crop density and overall plant health, causing stunted growth or total plant collapse.
Symptoms typically manifest as chlorosis of the lower leaves, followed by progressive wilting and necrosis of the root system. As the infection advances, the roots become dark, mushy, and eventually decay, cutting off the supply of water and nutrients to the aerial parts of the plant, which often leads to rapid death.
The environmental requirements for the pathogen are high moisture levels and cool to moderate temperatures. Zoospores, which are the motile spores of the fungus-like pathogen, are primarily responsible for the rapid spread of the disease through irrigation water and water-saturated soil environments during the rainy seasons.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this disease. Effective strategies include improving soil drainage to prevent waterlogging, ensuring strict hygiene to prevent the introduction of the pathogen, and applying specialized fungicides where necessary. Cultural practices that promote rapid root growth and plant vigor remain the first line of defense against the onset of infection.
