Description
Phytophthora clandestina is a pathogenic oomycete responsible for the destructive root rot disease in clover species. As a soil-borne organism, it systematically invades the root tissues, causing significant structural damage to the plant's underground organs and compromising the entire vascular system.
The primary host for this disease is the subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum), although other species of the genus Trifolium can also be susceptible. Its presence represents a significant constraint in agricultural regions where clover is vital for soil nitrogen fixation and livestock forage production.
Symptoms are often manifested as poor plant vigor, yellowing of the foliage, and wilting during dry periods. Upon closer investigation, the roots appear discolored, brown, and necrotic, with a noticeable reduction in the number of healthy lateral roots, leading to eventual plant collapse.
The development and spread of Phytophthora clandestina are highly dependent on cool and moist environmental conditions. The pathogen produces oospores that can persist in the soil for several years, allowing the disease to survive long periods without a susceptible host present in the field.
