Description

The causative agent of the disease is the oomycete Phytophthora cocois, a highly destructive soil-borne pathogen. It is classified as a water mold, and its primary mode of action is the degradation of the vascular system and crown tissue, leading to the rapid collapse of the coconut palm.

The pathogen specifically infects the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). It poses a severe threat to commercial plantations in tropical and subtropical regions, often resulting in significant economic losses by destroying high-yielding trees that are vital for local agricultural economies.

Typical symptoms include the yellowing and drooping of the spear leaf (the youngest unopened leaf). As the disease progresses, the heart rot effect becomes visible, where the soft tissues of the crown decay, eventually leading to the shedding of leaves and the death of the terminal bud.

The development of Phytophthora cocois is facilitated by environmental factors such as high rainfall, waterlogged soils, and temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. The pathogen spreads rapidly via motile zoospores that move through soil water and surface runoff, effectively colonizing new areas.

The impact of this disease is devastating due to the high mortality rate of infected trees. To manage the disease, the following strategies should be employed:

  • Strict phytosanitary practices to ensure plant material is pathogen-free.
  • Implementation of effective drainage to prevent waterlogging.
  • Removal and burning of severely infected palms to stop inoculum spread.
  • Application of phosphonate-based fungicides via stem injection or soil drenching.
  • Routine inspection for early detection of necrotic spots on emerging leaves.
