Description
Taro leaf blight is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora colocasiae. This disease is widely recognized as the most devastating pathogen affecting taro (Colocasia esculenta) crops worldwide. It is characterized by rapid spread and high virulence, posing a significant threat to global food security in regions where taro serves as a staple crop.
The primary host for this pathogen is the taro plant. While its impact is most profound on cultivated Colocasia species, the disease has been documented in various tropical environments, where it disrupts the metabolic processes of the host plant, ultimately leading to significant reduction in tuber yield and quality.
Early symptoms include small, water-soaked, dark spots on the leaf blades that gradually expand and merge, turning into large necrotic lesions. Under high humidity, a distinct white, fuzzy growth—comprising of sporangia—often appears on the underside of these lesions. As the infection progresses, leaves wither and die, and the pathogen may move downward to the petioles and corms.
The disease thrives in warm, humid conditions with frequent rainfall, which facilitate the production and dissemination of zoospores. These spores are easily spread via wind-blown rain, irrigation water, and infected planting material, enabling the blight to rapidly overwhelm entire fields within a short period.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize the spread. Key strategies include the selection of resistant or tolerant cultivars, ensuring optimal field sanitation, and maintaining adequate spacing to improve air circulation. The application of appropriate fungicides may be necessary during the peak of the rainy season to keep infection levels below the economic threshold.
