The causative agent of the disease is the oomycete Phytophthora dauci. This pathogen is known to cause severe foliar damage in carrot crops, leading to significant yield losses. It is classified as an aggressive soil-borne pathogen that thrives under specific climatic conditions.

The primary host for this fungus-like organism is the cultivated carrot (Daucus carota). While it specifically targets carrots, the pathogen's ability to persist in the soil makes it a perennial threat for farmers, especially in regions with cool, moist temperate climates where carrot production is intensive.

Symptoms typically start as small, dark, water-soaked spots on the leaves.

  • Dark brown or black necrotic lesions on the foliage.
  • Leaf petioles collapse and turn brown.
  • General yellowing and wilting of the plant canopy.
  • Root tissues may show signs of decay in severe infection cases.

The disease spread is heavily dependent on moisture. Prolonged rainy weather, high humidity, and fog provide the necessary environment for the pathogen to produce zoospores. These spores are easily splashed onto healthy leaves during rain or irrigation, accelerating the infection cycle within the field.

Effective control strategies involve a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Growers should prioritize crop rotation and ensure proper field drainage to minimize humidity. If the infection is detected early, application of fungicides specifically targeting oomycetes is recommended to prevent further spread and protect the developing root crop.
