Phytophthora frigida is a pathogenic oomycete known for causing severe root rot in various plant species, particularly those in cool temperate regions. Unlike some other species of the genus, this pathogen is specifically adapted to environments with moderate temperatures, making it a persistent threat in nurseries and greenhouse production.

The primary host range includes ornamental shrubs, such as rhododendrons, and various forest tree species. The pathogen specifically targets the root system, causing the disintegration of root tissues and preventing the plant from absorbing the essential nutrients and water required for healthy growth and survival.

Symptoms initially present as wilting or chlorosis of the foliage, often misidentified as drought stress. As the infection progresses, the root system turns dark brown to black and becomes soft or mushy due to tissue decay. In advanced stages, the infection may travel upwards to the crown, resulting in localized necrotic lesions on the stem or trunk.

The development of the disease is strictly correlated with soil moisture levels and temperature. The pathogen spreads rapidly through contaminated water runoff, splashing irrigation, and infected soil media. Conditions such as poor drainage, waterlogging, and excessive shade significantly increase the risk of an outbreak and the severity of the infection.

The economic impact of this pathogen is significant due to the high mortality rate of young plants and the difficulty of eradicating the pathogen from growing media once established. Effective protection relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach: focusing on strict sanitation, implementing efficient drainage systems, and applying specific fungicides that target oomycetes.
