Unlike typical soil-borne pathogens, this species is semi-aquatic, meaning it thrives in saturated soils and standing water. Its biology is closely linked to its ability to produce motile zoospores that can navigate through moist substrates to locate host tissues.

The host range of P. gonapodyides is diverse, affecting forest trees, nursery stock, and ornamental plants. It has been documented as a significant stress factor for species like oak and alder, particularly in riparian zones or nurseries where drainage is suboptimal. The pathogen's ability to persist in water sources makes it particularly challenging to eradicate once introduced into a production system.

The symptoms of infection are often progressive, starting with chlorosis, leaf wilting, and crown dieback. In more advanced stages, the infection spreads to the lower stem, causing lesions or cankers that compromise the vascular system. If you examine the root system, you will notice brown, necrotic roots that lack healthy root tips, significantly limiting the plant's water and nutrient uptake.

Chemical control involves the application of specialized fungicides effective against oomycetes, such as potassium phosphonate or metalaxyl, applied as a drench at the first sign of symptoms.
