The host range of Phytophthora gregata primarily includes members of the Proteaceae family, specifically the genus Banksia. It is a significant concern for ornamental nurseries and native plant propagation centers, where even minor infections can lead to substantial losses of valuable nursery stock if not properly managed.

Symptoms of the disease are often observed above ground as general decline, stunting, and foliage chlorosis. As the root system deteriorates, affected plants exhibit rapid wilting and necrosis of the root tissues. The lack of functional root hairs prevents water uptake, causing the plant to wither despite adequate soil moisture levels.

Phytophthora gregata thrives in saturated soils, where motile zoospores can easily swim through the water film to reach healthy roots. Improper drainage and poor water management in greenhouse systems are primary catalysts for rapid disease spread.

Growers should focus on using pathogen-free soil media, improving drainage systems, and maintaining strict hygiene protocols to prevent cross-contamination.
