Description
The disease known as Phytophthora leaf blight is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora heveae. This pathogen is a significant threat to rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) plantations worldwide, particularly in humid tropical regions where it can cause severe defoliation and yield losses in latex production.
The host range of Phytophthora heveae primarily targets the rubber tree, affecting seedlings, mature trees, and reproductive structures. In addition to foliage, the pathogen is known to impact the bark and even the fruits of the tree, which serves as a reservoir for the inoculum in the field.
Symptoms of the infection include water-soaked, dark-colored lesions on leaves that eventually turn necrotic. Premature leaf drop is a hallmark of severe infection, which weakens the tree over time. On the bark, the disease manifests as distinct lesions or 'cankers,' often accompanied by the exudation of latex or gum, which hampers tapping operations.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. The pathogen produces zoospores that require free water on plant surfaces to germinate and infect host tissues. Consequently, the disease spreads rapidly during rainy seasons or in areas with persistent fog and poor air circulation.
Effective management requires an integrated strategy to minimize the impact of Phytophthora heveae. Key protective measures include:
- selecting resistant or tolerant clones;
- maintaining proper plantation hygiene by removing infected plant debris;
- ensuring adequate spacing between trees to improve air flow;
- applying protective fungicides during periods of high disease pressure to prevent initial outbreaks.
