The disease is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora humicola, a significant soil-borne pathogen. Unlike typical fungi, this organism thrives in water-saturated environments and attacks the root system, severely disrupting the plant's nutrient and water uptake mechanisms.
This pathogen affects a diverse range of crops, including nursery stock, ornamental plants, and various vegetable species. It is particularly problematic in greenhouses and containerized plant production systems where environmental conditions are artificially controlled and often favor water accumulation.
Symptoms typically start below ground, often going unnoticed until significant root damage occurs. Visible signs include wilting of the foliage, stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and general decline. Eventually, the root system becomes dark, decayed, and soft, leading to the total collapse of the plant.
Environmental factors are crucial for the spread of Phytophthora humicola. Excessive soil moisture, poor drainage, and favorable temperatures (around 18–25°C) trigger the release of motile zoospores that swim in the soil water film to infect healthy roots. The pathogen produces resilient oospores that can survive in the soil for extended periods.

- Ensure proper soil drainage and avoid overwatering.
- Use sterilized growing media and pathogen-free planting stock.
- Sanitize all containers, benches, and tools regularly.
- Incorporate beneficial microorganisms, such as Trichoderma, to improve root health.
- Apply specific fungicides as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) program if necessary.
