Description

Phytophthora hydrogena is a specialized species of oomycete recognized for its preference for aquatic environments. Unlike terrestrial species, this pathogen thrives in waterlogged conditions and recirculating irrigation systems, making it a significant concern for controlled-environment agriculture.

The host range includes a variety of greenhouse crops and nursery stock, particularly those cultivated using hydroponic or aeroponic methods. When the pathogen enters a water supply, it can rapidly compromise the integrity of plant root systems, leading to reduced nutrient uptake.

Symptoms of infection initially appear as wilting, which is often misidentified as simple water stress. Upon closer inspection, roots show necrotic lesions, discoloration, and a mushy texture. In advanced stages, the structural degradation of the root cortex leads to plant collapse.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on moisture levels and water temperature. Zoospores, the motile reproductive structures, require free water to move and infect new hosts. Poor oxygenation in hydroponic reservoirs significantly accelerates the disease cycle.

Effective management requires rigorous sanitation protocols and preventive measures to stop the movement of zoospores. Strategies include:

  • sterilizing irrigation water using UV or ozone treatment;
  • implementing strict hygiene protocols for equipment;
  • regular monitoring of root health;
  • applying registered fungicides specifically effective against Oomycota.
