Description
The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Phytophthora idaei. It is a soil-borne pathogen that specifically attacks the root system of plants, leading to severe physiological disruptions in the host.
The primary host for this pathogen is the raspberry (Rubus idaeus). It is considered one of the most destructive diseases in raspberry production worldwide, particularly in regions with high rainfall or heavy soil conditions.
Symptoms begin with stunted growth and leaf chlorosis, followed by wilting and eventual death of the cane. A critical sign is the discoloration of the roots, which turn reddish-brown and lose their fine feeder root hairs, significantly reducing the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients.
Environmental conditions that favor the disease include waterlogged soil and mild temperatures. The motile zoospores produced by the pathogen move through water films in the soil, allowing the disease to spread rapidly through rows during irrigation or heavy rain.
