Description
The pathogen Phytophthora ilicis is an oomycete responsible for a destructive blight primarily affecting holly (Ilex species). This disease is particularly prevalent in regions with cool, wet climates, posing a significant threat to ornamental nurseries and landscape plantings where holly is used for hedges and aesthetic purposes.
The disease targets leaves, stems, and berries. Typical symptoms include the sudden appearance of dark, irregular spots on the leaves, followed by rapid necrosis. Infected leaves often turn purple or brown and drop prematurely from the plant. Lesions can also form on stems, which can girdle the branches and cause dieback.
Key signs of infection often involve extensive defoliation, particularly in the lower canopy of the shrub. Under high humidity conditions, white, cottony, or powdery-looking spore growth may be visible on the underside of the leaves. Left untreated, the plant exhibits significant thinning and loss of vigor, ultimately leading to poor ornamental quality.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on moisture. Phytophthora ilicis thrives in cool temperatures combined with high humidity and frequent rainfall. The pathogen’s zoospores are water-dispersed, meaning that splashing rain or irrigation water efficiently moves the inoculum between plants, creating rapid epidemic cycles in dense plantings.
Managing this disease requires a focus on sanitation and preventative cultural practices. Protecting the plants involves several key steps:
- Pruning out and disposing of infected branches to reduce the inoculum level in the area.
- Ensuring proper spacing between plants to maximize airflow and minimize leaf wetness.
- Applying fungicides containing copper or metalaxyl as a preventative measure during wet seasons.
- Avoiding overhead irrigation to prevent the splashing of zoospores onto healthy foliage.
