Phytophthora irrigata

Phytophthora irrigata is a highly destructive soil-borne oomycete pathogen notorious for causing root and crown rot in various ornamental and agricultural plants. The species is specifically named for its common mode of transmission: through irrigation systems, which allows it to disseminate rapidly throughout greenhouse environments and container nurseries, causing significant economic losses.

The host range includes a wide variety of greenhouse-grown plants, nurseries, and certain vegetables. It is particularly problematic in environments that rely on recirculation systems for irrigation, as the spores (zoospores) can travel through water lines and infect large blocks of plants simultaneously if the water is not properly sanitized.

Key symptoms of an infection include wilting, chlorosis, and stunted plant growth. When the root system is examined, it often exhibits significant browning and decay, characterized by the sloughing off of the outer root cortex. In severe cases, the crown of the plant may also show rot, leading to irreversible wilting and eventual plant death.

The development of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture. Phytophthora irrigata thrives in saturated soil conditions, poor drainage, and high humidity levels. Since the pathogen produces motile zoospores that require free water to swim and infect new roots, preventing water stagnation is critical to limiting the spread of the disease.

Management and prevention strategies are essential for controlling this pathogen:

• Strict sanitation protocols for water sources, including UV or ozone treatment of irrigation water.
• Improvement of drainage and aeration in potting media to avoid waterlogging.
• Regular inspections of root systems for early signs of browning.
• Prompt disposal of symptomatic plants to reduce inoculum levels.
• Use of targeted chemical treatments and biological control agents as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.
