Description

The disease is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora lactucae, a specialized pathogen that specifically targets various lettuce cultivars. Unlike true fungi, this organism produces motile zoospores that thrive in wet environments, allowing the pathogen to move rapidly through irrigation water or waterlogged soil.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are species within the Lactuca genus, most notably cultivated lettuce. It can cause significant economic losses in both hydroponic systems and traditional field production, affecting plants at any growth stage, though seedlings and young plants are particularly vulnerable.

Early symptoms usually involve the appearance of water-soaked spots on the lower leaves, which eventually turn necrotic and brown. Under high humidity conditions, a white, moldy growth appears on the undersides of the leaves, corresponding to the pathogen's sporulation, leading to rapid decay and collapse of the plant foliage.

Development is driven by environmental conditions, particularly prolonged periods of leaf wetness and high soil moisture. Optimal temperatures for the infection typically range from 15°C to 20°C. Stagnant water or excessive sprinkler irrigation significantly facilitates the spread of zoospores throughout the field or greenhouse.

The economic impact of the disease is severe, often resulting in complete crop loss if left unmanaged. Control strategies must be integrated, focusing on improving drainage, reducing leaf wetness via optimized irrigation scheduling, strict sanitation of growing equipment, and the use of certified disease-free seeds or transplants to break the infection cycle.
