Phytophthora litoralis
Description
Causal agent and disease type. Phytophthora litoralis is a destructive soil-borne pathogen belonging to the oomycete class. This organism causes severe root and stem rot, systematically impairing the host plant's vascular integrity. Like other members of the Phytophthora genus, it is often referred to as a water mold, thriving in moisture-rich environments and attacking the roots of various agricultural and ornamental species.
Host range and infection impact. The pathogen typically affects woody trees and shrubs, particularly those in coastal areas or regions with poor soil drainage. It targets the root system first, eventually spreading upwards into the crown. Once the vascular tissues are compromised, the plant loses its ability to transport nutrients, leading to gradual decline and eventual death of the specimen.
Symptoms and signs. The primary symptoms include foliage chlorosis, premature wilting, and thinning of the canopy. An examination of the root collar often reveals dark, sunken necrotic lesions and tissue decay beneath the bark. In severe cases, the entire root system may become rotted and brittle, preventing the plant from anchoring properly in the soil and leading to rapid collapse.
Conditions for development. Phytophthora litoralis development is strongly correlated with high soil moisture and moderate temperatures. The pathogen survives in the form of resilient oospores within the soil and decaying plant debris. It spreads rapidly through contaminated water runoff, shared garden tools, and the movement of infested soil or nursery stock, making sanitation critical for disease control.
Protection and prevention measures. Because curative treatments are rarely successful once the pathogen is established, prevention remains the most effective management strategy:
- Ensure proper soil drainage to avoid water accumulation around the root zone.
- Use only certified, disease-free nursery stock for planting.
- Implement strict sanitation protocols for garden tools to prevent cross-contamination.
- Remove and destroy infected plants immediately, including the surrounding soil.
- Apply specific fungicides as a preventive measure in high-risk areas during the growing season.
