The pathogen is highly persistent, capable of surviving in soil or plant debris for extended periods through the production of hardy resting spores (oospores). While specific host ranges may vary, agricultural environments with poor drainage and high humidity are highly susceptible to outbreaks of this disease.

Symptoms of the infection typically include localized water-soaked lesions on the leaves and stems, which rapidly turn necrotic and darken in color. The base of the stem may become brittle, and in advanced stages, the root system shows signs of water-logging and decay. Under high humidity, a thin, white mycelial growth may appear on the necrotic tissues.

Temperatures between 15°C and 22°C, combined with prolonged leaf wetness, create the perfect storm for the pathogen to reproduce and infect neighboring plants.

  • Select disease-resistant cultivars and healthy certified seeds or starts.
