Phytophthora medicaginis is a destructive oomycete pathogen responsible for Phytophthora root rot in alfalfa. Unlike true fungi, this organism thrives in aquatic environments, making it a major threat to legumes grown in poorly drained fields or high-moisture climates.

The primary host for this pathogen is alfalfa, though it can occasionally affect other legume species. The infection targets the roots and crown of the plant, disrupting the transport of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the premature senescence and death of the plant.

Symptoms initially appear as chlorosis or yellowing of the leaves, often misidentified as nitrogen or micronutrient deficiency. Upon inspection, the root system shows distinctive brownish-black lesions, rotting of the taproot, and significant loss of lateral feeder roots.
